Youssef AbouelNour obtained his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 2019 and is now a Ph.D. Candidate in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at New York University Tandon School of Engineering. His research work focuses on developing an in-situ, image-based, automated inspection system for detecting defects during additive manufacturing. Currently, the work focuses on using optical and infrared (IR) imaging methods for in-process defect detection. Based on image acquisition, this method enhances image quality using image processing, machine learning, and other methods for image correlation and for interpretation of defect information through feature analysis. The success of this work will help improve manufacturing part quality, reduce material waste, and provide high-resolution defect maps of specimens that can be used for life cycle analysis.
