“Markup” panel focuses on measuring the spread of deceptive information

A diverse panel of journalists, faculty, and computer industry personnel, including NYU Tandon Ph.D. candidate Laura Edelson, recently engaged in an online discussion sponsored by The Markup. The nonprofit, online news outlet that “investigates how powerful institutions are using technology to change our society,” put together the session under the heading of “Browsing Disinformation.”

In addition to Edelson, panelists were: Julia Angwin, Editor-in-Chief, The Markup; Deen Freelon, Associate Professor in the Hussman School of Journalism and Media at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; David Lazer, University Distinguished Professor of Political Science and Computer and Information Science at Northeastern University; and Rebecca Weiss, Director of Data Science at Mozilla. Ethan Zuckerman, associate professor of public policy, information and communication at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst moderated the session.
