Edelson to Ad Platforms: Disinformation is a Security Problem

NYU Tandon Ph.D. candidate Laura Edelson has spent much of the past few years pulling back the curtain on political advertising through her work with the Online Political Transparency Project at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering.  Therefore, it is not surprising that, when WiscPolitics reported in a December 8, 2020 article that U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) was joining several of her colleagues in urging Google to be more aggressive in identifying and removing election-related disinformation, that Edelson would be called on to comment. In her response, Edelson labels disinformation in political advertising as “a security problem,” and urges Google and other ad platforms “to start treating it as such” through a more proactive approach. “When loopholes and vulnerabilities in systems for detecting political or disinformation content are found, companies need to act quickly to protect users from attacks that diminish trust in our democratic system,” she affirmed.
