A study conducted by researchers at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, and co-lead by CCS co-founder Dr. Nasir Memon, found pairing headlines with credibility alerts, from fact-checkers, the public, news media, and AI, can reduce a readers’ intention to share such posts. An article about the study, published on April 29, 2019, notes that attaching “credibility indicators” to specious headlines can influence the impulse to share dubious news items on social media, but the effectiveness of such devices does vary with demographics and with political affiliation.
