Cybersecurity is not merely a technical issue. It also has legal, economic, ethical, and regulatory facets, and sometimes even psychological or medical aspects that must be taken into account. The degree programs, competitions, and research opportunities of CCS offer students a 360 degree perspective on the field, thereby opening them to a number of potential research frontiers, and the career possibilities that go along with this emerging work. In addition to its core CCS faculty, research projects of the Center engage across disciplinary lines with NYU’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, and departments within the College of Arts and Sciences.
Interdisciplinary initiatives include:
Research initiatives that includes discipline-merging projects like The Archive Framework, which preserves historical versions of legal documents and can detect when tampering occurs; watermarking strategies that prevent hacking of secure microfluidic biochips (FMBs) now routinely used for biological computing and clinical diagnostics applications; and the use of social science methodology in studies conducted by the Cybersafety Research Center, such as the recent investigation of social media’s failure to protect children.
Conferences, lectures, and panel discussions such as the Women Leaders in Cybersecurity event, and the Cybersecurity Lecture that regularly bring together professionals from acdemia, finance, law and goverment.
Specialized academic offerings, like the M.S. in Cybersecurity Risk and Strategy program—offered jointly by the NYU School of Law and NYU Tandon School of Engineering—which is designed to create managers with the integrated expertise needed to play a leadership role in the field. The one-year program addresses the business, regulatory, and technical dimensions of cyber risk management, laying the foundation for developing a high-reliability IT organization, understanding security concepts from a managerial point of view, including policies and assurances, and recognizing vulnerabilities and exploits.
Cooperative work with a new and expanded NYU Tandon Bridge Program, which provides individuals from non-STEM academic backgrounds a way to master the core computer science principles — algorithms, data structures, discrete mathematics, systems fundamentals — that serve as the building blocks of the modern economy. This 100% online, non-credit course is self-paced, designed for flexibility, and allows students to balance professional, personal, and academic goals at your own pace.
