As DoD takes on deepfakes, Tandon Professor Memon puts the risk in context

As reported in Newsy.com, an independent online news service, the U.S. Department of Defense has targeted a particularly insidious new enemy: “deepfake” technology that can subtly alter still photos and video. And, the video report, posted on January 28, suggests that the opposition is getting better at this form

The report includes a quote from NYU Tandon’s Dr. Nasir Memon, who noted that the context in which such manipulated media is found is what makes this technology a deep concern. The vice dean for student and academic affairs at NYU Tandon, who has done his own significant research in the field of deepfakes, observed that, “If it’s a video of me talking to you, nobody cares. It’s no big deal.” But, he adds, “if we are talking about a video captured by law enforcement using a body camera, we care. People’s lives matter.”
