Dr. Santiago Torres-Arias, a 2020 Ph.D. graduate from Tandon’s Computer Science and Engineering program and an active researcher in the Center for Cybersecurity was one of seven current or recent Latinx Ph.D.s chosen for a round-up article entitled “Graduates Sin Limite.” Torres-Arias, who worked with his advisor, Dr. Justin Cappos in the Secure Systems Laboratory during his tenure at the school, reflected in the article on his journey from Mexico to Brooklyn.
According to the article, the journey for Torres-Arias started with a book: Computer Networking: A Top-Down Approach by the current Dean of Engineering and Computer Science at NYU Shanghai Keith Ross. “I knew I needed to study with people like him, and I worked three jobs in order to save the money to come to New York,” he recalled.
Now an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at Purdue University, Torres-Arias credits his advisor Cappos as a “model” for his teaching style, which includes ” a lot of hands-on work with real software.” Last month, one of the projects Cappos and Torres-Arias developed together, a framework that provides end-to-end security for the development supply chain called in-toto, released v.1.0.0.
